AFDO NDIS Champion Kalena Spurling

Kalena lives independently in Burnie Tasmania and is very excited to be chosen as an NDIS Champion. Kalena liked learning new information at training and enjoyed meeting all the new Champions.

Kalena is an NDIS participant and been accessing the NDIS for 2 years now. Kalena likes to find out information and make her own choices.

Kalena’s family are very important to her, she has a Mum and Dad and two brothers, one brother lives in England. Kalena loves her animals because they love her back and they are always very snuggly and like to sleep on her bed. Kalena has 2 cats, Milo and Scarlett, 2 pet rabbits, Floppsy and Daisy and 1 dog that is ½ husky and ½ Samoyed.

Kalena loves outdoor activities as well as playing basketball with New Horizons, going to the beach in summer and playing beach cricket with friends. Kalena also likes to make jewellery for herself, family and friends.

Kalena works at Lifeline 2 days a week, she loves her work and also gets to grab some bargains from the shop.

Kalena is the Members Executive for the North West Tasmania self-advocates representative for Spaek Out Advocacy and has just returned from the Inclusion International Congress in Florida Orlando in the USA.

About the NDIS Champions program

Would your business, organisation or community group benefit from a free information session on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), delivered by a person with disability in your local area?

Do you want to know more about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)? Do you want to understand what it will mean for people with disability?

The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) has recently employed and trained 30 people with disabilities from all over Australia to become NDIS Champions - to deliver reliable, fact-checked information about the NDIS in their local communities.

NDIS Champions presentations have answers to the most frequently asked questions, including:

  • What is the NDIS?
  • Who can access it?
  • Why do we need it?
  • How does it work?
  • What do I need to do?
  • NDIS Plans
  • And more

If your business, organisation, or community group would benefit from a free information session on the NDIS, you can fill out an Expression of interest form (online or PDF), or contact your local Champion directly using the contact details on the Champions' page.

Note: NDIS Champions presentations were free during late 2016, but the project funding for this has ended. The Champions we trained are now working independently as presenters, and are charging modest fees to cover their time, expenses and expertise. Contact your local NDIS Champion to find out more.
